[Purdue] Jiji, Guitar Performance

January 26, 2018 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

From tango to trance and everything in between, Jiji is an award-winning guitarist of adventurous tone and texture. Hailing from South Korea, Jiji’s repertoire includes sonata staples of the classical canon and electronically tinged soundscapes from her own works as a performer and DJ.

Rare is the classically trained guitarist who is equally at home strumming Segovia as spinning DJ sets of happy hardcore electronica. Or one inclined toward experimental works that incorporate virtual reality headsets. Or one who can spark a jam session on a moving trolley while touring in Hong Kong. From tango to trance and everything in between, Jiji is a guitarist of adventurous tone and texture. Jiji’s repertoire includes sonata staples of the classical canon and electronically tinged soundscapes from her own works as a performer and DJ and LINÜ, a collective formed with Icelandic cohort Gulli Bjornsson.

Hailing from South Korea, Jiji (Jiyeon Kim) was accepted to the Korea National University of Arts at age 14, later attended the Cleveland Institute of Music, and was accepted as one of the first two guitarists at the Curtis Institute of Music. Jiji’s impeccable musicianship earned her First Prize at the 2016 Concert Artists Guild International Competition—a prestigious calling card for rising-star talent you may recall from past Convocations performances by the Brasil Guitar Duo, Donald Sinta Quartet, and Naomi O’Connell. Her recital venues include Carnegie Hall, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and she has performed chamber music with Eighth Blackbird, members of the Bang on a Can All-Stars, and the Tanglewood Chamber Orchestra. Currently pursuing a Master of Music degree at Yale, Jiji also works as a composer with Yale’s Repertory Theater, Cabaret, and School of Art. After a recent guest-solo performance with the Kansas City Symphony, The Kansas City Star called Jiji “a graceful and nuanced player…(presenting) an intimate, captivating performance.”

Don’t miss an artist expanding her instrument’s boundaries to deliver voices you may not have thought possible.
