Generally speaking, only students in college needed to prepare resumes, but now more and more high school students are also starting to produce resumes, especially if you want to apply to an undergraduate program in the United States.
“The sooner you have a professional resume, the more likely you be prepared for proportional opportunities”
“For high school students, preparing a resume is a very valuable thing,” said Kelly Frazer, an adviser to the US Green Apple education consulting firm. Some universities explicitly require applicants to provide resumes, while others welcome them as “supplements”. In addition, most internships and scholarship applications also require a resume.
Although the resume is not necessary for ninth grade students, it is time for younger students to consider this. Nancy Pauling, president and senior counselor of the Florida Institute of Education Excellence, said: “CVs don’t have to be formal, but I suggest that they begin consciously recording their experiences in the summer before the ninth grade.”
“The sooner a student writes a professional resume, the more likely he is to seize it when the opportunity arises,” said Jeremy Fisher, director of the Career Center at Creighton University in Nebraska.
What should be included in a resume?
What should be included in the resume of a high school students? Fraser believes that this document should not be trivial, and it is important to make a clear overall impression. “The documents you submit to the university do not have to be all-inclusive, but the parts of the resume should combine and form a vivid picture.”
Macho Hansen Shawitz is the founder of an educational institution in California. She recommends that resumes for high school students include the following information: standardized test scores, and pre-requisite courses (referred to as university-level in high school), Honors Courses, Awards, Events, and Interests. “The school wants to know who you are,” Shavitz said.
In addition to coursework, taking care of your younger siblings or part-time experience is also worth mentioning, because it shows that you are a person who bears responsibilities.
Lidia Nava, a high school counselor in Riverside, Calif., said she asked students to write from their kindergarten experiences on their resumes and urged them to detail the volunteering services and long-standing hobbies.
Nava prompts that you should not deliberately mislead admissions offices your resume. “If the content of the resume submitted when applying for a university is not true, this will create a big problem.”
Conciseness Is Crucial
The resume of a high school student is the same as that of a college student, following many of the same rules, one of which is conciseness. “No 17-year-old person should submit a three-page resume,” said Lee A. Weisenberg, Director of Admissions and Financial Assistance at Bates College. “Most universities require you to fill out the experience on the web page when applying. Instead of submitting a resume.”
Experts emphasize that resumes are better at one page and should be written in a clear and concise manner, without using exaggerated fonts and fancy graphics. Nava also urges not to list social media accounts nor unprofessional email addresses, such as QQ mailboxes.
“Admissions officers, like employers, review resumes in a single scan – this is usually done in 15 to 30 seconds or less. Therefore, resumes should look professional (including style, format, fonts, etc.) and be easy to read. Fisher said, “It’s very important to use organized line spacing to highlight important information in bold, underline or italics.”
Experts say that some consultants and counselors will provide resume templates for students, but universities often discourage the use of templates because it limits the subjective initiative of students when writing resumes. Fisher said that templates can be used as a guide but resumes created from templates do not stand out. They ask “Why do you want your resume to look exactly like everyone elses?”
