URBANA – State Representative Carol Ammons will host the 2018 Women Making Waves Event on Saturday, October 27th at Laborer’s Local 703, 108 E. Anthony Drive, in Urbana. Former Ohio State Senator and President of Our Revolution Nina Turner will serve as the keynote speaker at this year’s prestigious event.
Senator Turner was a surrogate for Bernie Sanders during the 2016 presidential campaign. In 2017, Turner became President of the Sanders-affiliated group Our Revolution. The organization’s mission is to educate voters about issues, get people involved in the political process, and work to organize and elect progressive candidates. In a speech last year, Senator Turner said that the obstacles women face will bring out their fortitude: “We can’t have testimony without a test. And we are being tested right now for whether or not we’ve got courage enough, hope enough, fight enough and love enough to do what is necessary.”
Women Making Waves is committed to encouraging more women to run for office. While the percentage of women in the House and Senate has increased over the past twenty years, women account for only 19% of Congress but are 51% of the population. Many local and statewide Democratic female candidates will attend this year’s event.
Panelists in last year’s Women Making Waves event included Lt. Governor Candidate Litesa Wallace, McClain County Clerk nominee Nikita Richards, State Representative Theresa Mah, Judge Renee Jackson, Cunningham Township Supervisor Danielle Chynoweth, UIUC Education Policy graduate student Susan Ogwal, and award-winning journalist Janice Marie Collins.
Representative Ammons will facilitate a one-on-one question-and-answer session with Senator Turner. Doors open at 9 am; the program begins at 9:30.
