Study on the effect of noise exposure on hearing
Men and women ages 18-25 are needed to examine the effects of noise exposure on hearing. Participants must have a history of loud noise exposure and not have any musical background.
The principal investigator of this study is Lata Krishnan, clinical professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences.
Each participant will be asked to complete a questionnaire and receive a hearing assessment. They will also receive educational material regarding hearing protection and a pair of foam earplugs. Participants will receive $20 for about one hour of their time.

Augmented reality research project
Participants age 18 or older are needed for a study to evaluate human skill transfer and learning using augmented reality applications.
The user study sessions will last approximately 90 to 100 minutes. Participants will receive a compensation of $15 for successfully completing the experiments.

Maternal attention study
Participants are needed for a study to investigate how the transition from non-mom to mom affects attention abilities and perceived cognition. Participants will complete a short online survey (approximately 10 minutes), take the computer-based Attention Network Test – Revised (28 minutes), and engage in a short interview (approximately 20 minutes) about their motherhood experiences.
Criteria for participating:
* Biological, adoptive, foster, or stepmom who is between the ages of 18 and 40.
* Must be a non-nursing mother.
* Must be a mother who is not currently pregnant.
* Mother of child(ren) between the ages of 1 and 12.

Teens needed for study on benefits to eating breakfast
Participants are needed for a study on whether there are benefits to eating breakfast.
Participants will either eat breakfast or skip breakfast for six months. Those in one of the breakfast groups will receive free breakfast meals every day. At the beginning, middle and end of the study, researchers will take measurements including body composition, glycemic control, energy expenditure, sleep patterns and appetite. Participants will be paid for completing all procedures. Individuals age 13-19 who frequently skip breakfast may qualify.

Researchers will provide different types of yogurts to participants to consume at home for breakfast. Study: Are there benefits to eating hummus as an afternoon snack?
Researchers are looking for participants for a study looking at possible benefits to eating hummus as an afternoon snack.
Participants will receive different types of snacks to consume at home. For each type of snack, participants will complete a five-hour testing day that measures feelings of appetite (hunger and fullness), thoughts of food and blood sugar. Participants will be paid $150 for completing all study procedures.

Wearable sensor study
Researchers are recruiting healthy adults ages 50 to 90 without any swallowing difficulties (i.e., dysphagia) to participate in a study. Participants will wear adhesive sensors on the neck and eat various food items for a swallowing test.
Part 1 of this study requires one visit (approximately 90 minutes) to the I-EaT Swallowing Lab in Lyles-Porter Hall. Participants will be compensated $10 for their participation. Free parking will be offered to all participants in the parking garage adjoining the building. There is a possibility to participate in Part 2 of the study later in the academic year (if interested).

Study investigating walking stability when infants and toddlers carry toys
Newly walking infants and toddlers are needed for a study investigating walking stability. Research has shown that infants holding toys in a standing task show an increase in standing stability. Researchers are interested in whether the same is true when infants/toddlers are walking while carrying toys.
Infants and toddlers will engage in a 20-minute free-play session with toys of different sizes and weights and then will be encouraged to walk down a straight pathway carrying toys of different sizes and weights. To measure walking characteristics (e.g., walking speed, step length, step width), children will wear reflective markers on their ankles, so that researchers can capture their movements using specialized motion capture cameras.
The project consists of a 40- to 45-minute session at the Life-Span Motor Development Lab in Lambert Fieldhouse. Newly walking infants (ages 13 months to 14 months) must be capable of walking independently (without any support) for at least 10 consecutive steps. Researchers are also recruiting toddlers (23.5 to 24.5 months). Children will receive a Motor Development Lab T-shirt, and parents will receive $5 for travel costs.

Research project investigating the relationship between cognitive and motor abilities in 2-year-olds
Children ages 2 years to 2 years and 11 months are needed for a project exploring the relationship between cognitive and motor abilities in children.
Many developmental disorders (e.g., autism, ADHD, developmental coordination disorder) are characterized by problems in both cognitive skills (e.g., problem-solving, working memory) and motor skills function (e.g., balancing, running). Researchers are investigating possible common central mechanisms involved in these two domains in typically developing children. The researchers hope that the findings from this research will lead to the development of intervention techniques such as motor skills training that will have the potential to improve cognitive skills in both special needs populations and typically developing children.
The parent and child will visit the Life-Span Motor Development Lab at Purdue for a 1-hour-and-15-minute session. The child will be asked to complete a few cognitive games (using memory and problem-solving skills) and a few motor skills games (using fine motor skills and balance abilities). For example, for one of the cognitive games, the child will be asked to sort objects based on their size. For one of the motor games, the child will be asked to build a tower out of blocks, and for another, the child will stand on a device that measures balance abilities. In addition, parents will complete two questionnaires during the test session. The child will receive a small gift as a token appreciation, and parents will receive $5 for completing the questionnaires.

Adult listeners needed for speech study
The I-EaT (Imaging, Evaluation, and Treatment of Swallowing) Lab, under the direction of Professor Georgia Malandraki, is looking for speakers of American English ages 18-45 to participate in a study on how well the speech of children is understood.
Participants will listen to speech samples of children and type the words and sentences they hear. Those who qualify for the study also will receive a free hearing screening. The total time commitment for this study is 45-60 minutes, and eligible participants will receive $5.

Nutrition study on Mediterranean-style diets and health
Researchers are looking for men and women who would like to volunteer for a research study that assesses the effects of consuming Mediterranean diets varying in glycemic index on cardiometabolic health and well-being.
Participants will have all food provided to them throughout the intervention and will be compensated $600 for completion of all study procedures. If someone chooses to terminate participation prior to the end of the study, partial payment will be provided based on length of their participation.

Participants should be ages 30-69 with a body mass index (BMI) between 25 and 37, nonpregnant, nondiabetic, not participating in more than three hours of exercise per week, no history of cardiovascular disease, and weight stable (± 6.5 pounds in previous three months).

Weight loss and protein quantity on sleep quality
Researchers are looking for men and women who would like to volunteer for a weight loss research study that will look at how protein intake influences changes in sleep quality.
For this 14-week study, volunteers will come to the Purdue Clinical Research Center for four one-hour testing days. Testing days will include measures of body composition, clinical health measures and sleep quality. During the study, all foods will be provided. Participants will receive $400 for completing the study.

Study on autonomous vehicle use and acceptance
Individuals are needed for a study focused on investigating the effect of introductory materials on autonomous vehicle use, secondary task performance, and AV trust and acceptance. Through this study, researchers hope to better understand how engagement with secondary tasks while being autonomously driven affects trust and acceptance of AV.
Participants will complete an online survey that includes questions on socioeconomic information and attitudes toward different types of automation. Those over age 65 also will need to complete an additional, short over-the-phone pre-screen for memory impairment. Participants also will come to the NEXTRANS Center in Purdue Research Park to complete an experiment in a driving simulator (estimated 2.5-hour duration).
Potential participants must be licensed drivers who are at least 18 years old, not prone to motion sickness, and without mental impairment or physical impairment that would make it difficult for them to get in and out of the driver’s seat of the simulator unassisted. Participants are asked that no medications, caffeine or nicotine be consumed eight hours before the time of participation.
Participants will not receive compensation for completing only the online survey. Full completion of the 2.5-hour study will be compensated between $15 and $45, and partial completion of the study will be compensated $15.

Sleep and health in the home study
Researchers at Purdue are conducting an in-home research study of how early stress and sleep patterns relate to diet and health in toddlers from 18 to 30 months of age.
In-home participation includes questionnaires; an interview about toddler sleep-related routines; a small sample of hair; and height, weight and waist measurements. To assess sleep, toddlers will wear a small activity sensor to capture their day and nighttime movements, and parents will be asked to report on their toddler’s sleep and meals.
As compensation for participating in the study, parents will receive $75 and children will receive books, toys and stickers.

Word learning study for preschool children
Researchers are seeking children 54 to 71 months old to participate in a study of word learning.
Eight one-hour sessions can be scheduled at Purdue in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. Four of these sessions can be scheduled at the participant’s home or another location (school, day care, community center). Families receive $10 per session and a speech, language and hearing evaluation for their child.
Study for employees and their supervisor
Researchers are seeking university staff employees as well their direct supervisor for a three-week study regarding leadership. This study involves employees completing one survey each evening after work, and supervisors completing two surveys per day, for three working weeks. Employees can earn up to $35 and supervisors up to $65 in Amazon gift cards.
Eligibility is determined and sign-up completed via an online survey (approximately 15 minutes in length). Employees will complete this survey first and nominate their supervisor in the process. Bioavailability of magnesium chloride from a liquid supplement and a traditional salt
Nana Gletsu-Miller, associate professor in the Department of Nutrition Science, and her research team are recruiting volunteers to compare the absorption of over-the-counter magnesium supplements. Participants will come to three clinic visits (10 hours per visit) at Purdue. Blood will be taken for measurement of magnesium status and dietary intake of magnesium will be measured.
Men and women ages 18 to 65 with a body mass index within 18-35 kg/m2 and who are in good health are eligible. Compensation is up to $330 for completion of the study.

Maternal Context of Pregnancy Project
Women in the first trimester of pregnancy are needed for the Maternal Context of Pregnancy Project, which examines the relationships between experiences mothers may have during pregnancy and how those experiences might “get under the skin” and affect children’s development.
Participation includes one online questionnaire and hair sample (to assess levels of hormones related to stress and pregnancy) once per trimester (at about 12, 26 and 38 weeks pregnant), and an online questionnaire and cheek swabs from mother and baby at six months postpartum. Around the time of delivery, with the help of participants’ hospital, birth center or midwife, a small sample of blood from the mother and some samples of the placenta will be collected to examine changes in gene expression related to different kinds of experiences during pregnancy.
Participants are compensated $25 per assessment (a total of $100 for the whole study) as appreciation for their time.
Sodium and fat quantification by MRI
This study aims to test and optimize a novel noninvasive method to quantify muscle sodium concentration and fat content by using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Sodium and fat levels in skeletal muscle can be used as a marker of several common diseases. Researchers aim to develop a method to quantify these levels accurately and noninvasively. Since sodium and fat levels are age-related, volunteers covering a wide range of age are needed for this development.
The researchers are looking for healthy boys and girls age 10-17. The researcher will take several MRI images of the left calf of the participant. Participants will be asked to come for one MRI exam, which takes about one hour. After the participants finish the one-time participation, they will receive $20 and their MRI images.

Swallowing and speech study for children with cerebral palsy
The I-EaT (Imaging, Evaluation, and Treatment of Swallowing) Lab under the direction of Georgia Malandraki is looking for children age 7-12 with hemiplegic (unilateral) cerebral palsy to participate in a study with the overall goal of designing better treatments for speech and swallowing difficulties.
Participants will receive speech, language and hearing testing, EMG recordings of muscle activity, and a free MRI of the brain. All activities are child-friendly and can be completed in one, two, or three testing sessions, depending on parent preferences. Families of eligible children will receive $80 at the conclusion of testing.

Study to evaluate how sounds are processed in the human brain
Chinese- and English-speaking adults with normal hearing are needed for an experimental study to evaluate how sounds are processed in the human brain.
Subjects will participate in a minimum of two two-hour research sessions. Subjects will be asked to fill out forms before the actual experiment. The experimental procedure consists of recording electrical activity from the brain (using EEG-type electrodes attached to the head) in response to various sounds presented through headphones at comfortable listening levels. The subject’s task is to lie back and relax on a recliner situated in a sound-treated booth.
There will be about 40 subjects in the study. All research will be performed in the Auditory Electrophysiology Laboratory, Lyles-Porter Hall, Room 3043.
Participation in the study is voluntary. Participants who withdraw from the study before completion will receive compensation pro-rated based on amount of time completed. Payment will be given to subjects in the form of cash at the end of each session. Subjects are compensated at $25/session.
All subjects must be 20-30 years old, be right-handed, have no history of brain injury or psychiatric problems, and have normal hearing sensitivity by self-report. Chinese subjects must be native speakers of Mandarin from mainland China, have received formal instruction in English no earlier than age 9, and have no more than three years of music training on any combination of instruments.
English-speaking subjects must be native English speakers from the United States, must have no familiarity with spoken Chinese or any other tone language and have no more than three years of music training on any combination of instruments.
