BBC: The museum preserving the memories of broken hearts

Discover the everyday objects and mementos that embody a love that’s failed. Step inside the museum of broken relationships.

“It’s a love museum – just maybe upside down,” says Dražen Grubišić, co-founder of The Museum of Broken Relationships.

At first glance, the museum, situated in Zagreb, Croatia, houses a peculiar collection of seemingly unrelated and mundane objects. Take a closer look though, and you will find that each object embodies the story of a love that failed to last.

Inspired by their own break-up, artists Grubišić and his former partner Olinka Vištica wanted to create a place – using mementos that were “tokens of love and that made sense only in the relationship” – to explore how humans experience romance.

Donors from around the world have contributed items to the collection, each one telling a different story. Some are sad, some amusing, but each one gives a unique perspective on what it means to be in a relationship and what happens when it comes to an end.

“These are not artists, these are common people, everyday stories, but, as it turns out, they are stranger than any fiction you could imagine,” Grubišić explains.
