[Illinois] Help keep 20 tons of reusable stuff from the landfills

CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, IL – The University YMCA is seeking volunteers and donations to help make their annual Dump & Run recycling program happen. The Y’s Dump & Run program is entirely dependent on volunteers and keeps over 20 tons of unwanted goods out of Champaign-Urbana’s dumpsters and landfills each year. Dump & Run volunteers work alongside Y staff to collect unwanted items from dorms and donations from the community in May and sell the items for a low cost in August.

Volunteers are needed as early as May 2, 2018 to help collect, sort and pack up reusable items from campus move out and spring cleaning. Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the month of May. For each volunteer, volunteer orientation will take place at the University YMCA at the beginning of the volunteer’s shift. No heavy lifting is required.

Sign up to volunteer at http://signup.com/go/Ugrvrxf or call the Y at 217-337-1500.

“After just 6 hours of volunteering, you get first dibs on the things collected – and we get an unbelievable amount of great things donated! So come out and volunteer for this great cause,” said Ricki Runions, University YMCA Dump & Run coordinator.

If campus and community members would like to donate accepted items for the Big Sale in August, the University YMCA will be collecting donations during May on May 2, 3, and 4 from 8am-12pm and 4pm-6pm. Please drop off all accepted donations in the back (west side) of the University YMCA’s building, 1001 S. Wright Street, Champaign. The University YMCA will also be providing free pick-up days for furniture and bikes that people want to donate on May 8 and 9. To request a pick up, please visit:https://goo.gl/GupCWW

We collect furniture, dishes, glassware, pots & pans, small household appliances, computers, electronics, bicycles, office & school supplies, nearly-new clothing, books, toiletries, lawn & garden, artwork, vinyl & cds, musical instruments, sporting equipment & other household goods.

We do not collect televisions, paint, child/infant car seats, stoves, washers, dryers, non-working electronics & computer parts, sleeper sofas, mattresses, televisions, or large exercise equipment. The University YMCA reserves the right to refuse any donation offered, based on but not limited to, its size, weight, and condition.

The University YMCA would like to thank the community for making Dump & Run a success each year, now 17 years running. This project reduces litter and consumer waste, saves space in landfills, lowers dumping costs for certified housing and apartments, provides inexpensive items for people to purchase in the fall.
