The FRED S. BAILEY INTERNATIONAL SERVICE TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP FOR CAUSE-DRIVEN LEADERS offers scholarships of $600-1800 dollars for travel to University of Illinois undergraduate students leading international service projects.
The Fred S. Bailey International Travel Scholarship program will fund up to 75% of the total cost of international travel with a service component. Awards range from $600–$1800, depending on duration of study and associated costs (price of air travel to/from country, length of stay, etc.) For more information on maximum allowable funding for specific countries, click the link: Maximum Funding Allocation, by country
- Student must be enrolled as an undergraduate student in good standing at the University of Illinois – Urbana Champaign campus during the current or previous academic semester. Student need not be enrolled in classes at the time of travel but must be working towards a degree at UIUC. Students who will have completed their degree requirements by the departure date of travel are not eligible to apply.
- Minimum length of trip to be considered is 10 days.
- Students interested in receiving support for travel must apply within the specified application periods.
- Students must apply for funding for a specific international service trip but may submit more than one application for different opportunities.
- Students may only receive one international service travel scholarship while enrolled as an undergraduate at UIUC.
- Students must have specific travel plans related to an existing project or program and must have been involved in that program (academic or extracurricular) for a minimum of one semester prior to the time of departure.
- If selected, the student must complete the program requirements outlined below.
Applications will be reviewed by the Bailey Scholarship committee during two application periods:
Application Period 1
(For trips that occur between December 20, 2017 – August 30, 2018)
Applications Open: August 28, 2017

Application Period 2
(For trips that occur between May 1, 2018 – January 17, 2019)

- Students will be asked to describe the learning objectives of the project or program they are travelling for and how the trip is connected to their educational and career interests in international development and/or cross cultural understanding.
- All applicants must submit a letter of support from a faculty/staff sponsor with the application.
- Students will be selected on the basis of their demonstrated commitment to the project/program, long-term career goals in international development or related fields, the trip’s potential impact on the student’s learning and professional development, potential for positive impact on the host community and financial need.
- Beginning in the Fall of 2017, all recipients of the Bailey International Travel Scholarships will be required to complete a 7-week online pre-departure course. The Bailey Scholarship program has partnered with Omprakash EdGE to design a curriculum that will guide recipients as they reflect on their intentions and assumptions, examine problematic trends in international volunteering and within the broader landscape of aid and ‘development’ and dig deep into the concepts of ‘inequality’, ‘culture’ and ‘community.’ Every student will also receive an EdGE mentor to answer questions and help throughout the process to think critically and challenge assumptions.
- If selected, recipients must develop and submit a list of measurable learning objectives for the trip. Learning objectives must be approved by the Bailey Scholarship Director and a “Faculty Sponsor.” For more information on the role of the faculty sponsor, click here.
- If selected, recipients must keep a regular ‘Record of Perspectives’ documenting their project’s progress, local perspectives on issues and their personal progress towards meeting their learning goals.
- Recipients are required to attend a pre-course orientation at the University YMCA on Monday, October 23 from 4-7 PM and a mid-course meeting on Monday, November 13 from 4-7 PM.
- Recipients are required to attend the Leaders for Global Change conference held in March 2015 at the University YMCA. If attendance is not possible (due to conflicting travel, etc.), students can arrange an alternative form of participation with the Bailey Scholarship Director.
- Student must provide proof of travel and receipts for all travel expenses as well as any other trip related expenses as requested by the Bailey Scholarship Director.
- Accident & sickness medical expenses;
- Emergency medical evacuation;
- Repatriation of remains.All Bailey International Travel Scholarship recipients must have adequate international health insurance (in countries in which you’ll be travelling) in order to receive their scholarship funds.
