CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, IL- The University YMCA is asking campus and community members who have had or are having garage sales to drop off their leftover items anytime between 8am-12pm on Saturday, August 19 at the U. of I. Stock Pavilion located at 1402 W. Pennsylvania Avenue in Urbana for the Y’s 16th Annual Dump & Run Sale. The Y’s Dump & Run program is one of the biggest community recycling programs in Champaign County, Illinois. Donations and volunteer time from members of the community and the U. of I. campus help divert approximately 27 tons of reusable items from dumpsters and landfills each year.
This Saturday, August 19th marks the last day that the University YMCA will be collecting donations in August before the BIG Sale next weekend on August 26th and August 27th, 2017 at the U. of I. Stock Pavilion located at 1402 W. Pennsylvania Avenue, Urbana. For those arriving by car, you may pull your vehicle through the South entrance of the U. of I. Stock Pavilion off of Pennsylvania Avenue. Dump & Run volunteers will be there to greet you and collect your donations. For a list of what the Y collects, visit: universityymca.org/dump_and_run
“I take a moment to stand in the doorway of the of the immense space of the Stock Pavilion when we have it all set up. The stands and the ground floor are covered to the inch with furniture, lamps, rugs, bikes, electronic accessories, books, office supplies, etc,” says Ruta Ruber, a local community member who has been volunteering for the Y’s Dump & Run program for 12 years. “So much that it’s impossible to take it all in at once. I stand there and look at it and think this could have easily ended up in the landfill.”
About: Dump & Run is an annual community recycling program of the University YMCA. This project reduces litter and consumer waste, saves space in landfills, lowers dumping costs for certified housing and apartments and provides inexpensive items for folks to purchase in the fall.
How it works: Volunteers help collect, sort, and pack up items from move out days, spring cleaning and garage sales in May and in August to resell at a fraction of the cost to community and campus members at the end of August each year. The August 2017 collections and the August 2017 sale will take place at the University of Illinois Stock Pavilion at 1402 W. Pennsylvania Avenue in Urbana, Illinois.
